The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones ("games"), and hence it was known as "Circus Agonalis" ("competition arena"). It is believed that over time the name changed to in avone to navone and eventually to navona. Piazza Navona hosts important sculptural creations, such as: the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius; the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini and others; and the Pamphili palace.
Besides the Piazza itself, other marvellous monuments and churches sit nearby, such as the Church San Luigi dei Francesi (Church of St. Louis of the French), hosting a cycle of paintings by Caravaggio, and the Bramante cloister.

The building is characterised by the presence of a concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.
It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, because of its continuous use throughout its history
